| Preforms for Reinforcing Techniweave has been a leader in developing new process technologies for fabricating woven preforms with aerospace quality fibers. These preforms find application as reinforcements in polymer, ceramic, and carbon based matrices. There are several reasons for selecting a woven preform instead of a more traditional fabric cutting and stacking fabrication approach. For example, a net shape preform can be woven to a high fiber volume minimizing the need to debulk in the molding tool. Also, through thickness fibers can be incorporated to improve interlaminar properties. Traditionally there has been a trade-off between complexity of preform shape and complexity of fiber architecture. Much or our work has been directed to achieving both with automated fabrication techniques. Equipment and processing techniques for fabrication reinforced preforms have been developed with in house funds. Complex shapes can be woven having numerous directions of fiber orientation. For example, in-plane 0, 90+/-45 quasi isotropic orientations can be combined with through-the-thickness (Z) fibers. The Z fibers can be at 90 degrees or some other angle to the in-plane fibers to enhance interlaminar properties. The Z fibers can be positioned in localized areas of the component or globally throughout the preform structure. ![]() The photographs illustrate some of the components that have been demonstrated.
