3D Composite Mastrail and Rudders Help Guillemot Fly Across the Sea


French skipper Marc Guillemot departed from New York on Thursday, June 27th 2013 in an attempt to break the solo 60-foot monohull North Atlantic east-to-west crossing record – and he’s done it!  On Saturday July 6th, Guillemot  reached the end of his route with a time of 8 days, 5 hours, 20 minutes and 20 seconds – a whopping15 hours, 48 minutes and 11 seconds less than the previous record set by British skipper Alex Thomson in July 2012. Guillemot covered the 2880 miles between New York and The Lizard (the end point of the crossing) at an average speed of 14.59 knots.  Guillemot’s boat uses 3D composite rudders and a 3D composite mastrail – components that AEC helped design and develop specifically to help Giullemot’s boat, Safran, pick up speed while maintaining the durability needed to cross the ocean under what can sometimes be treacherous conditions.
